All the exhilaration of Irish Island Life, in complete comfort! |
|
Inishturkbeg is an island in Clew Bay, off the west coast of Ireland. Pure winds wash away the concerns of modern life, big skies make you gaze and wonder and dream, and clear waters refresh your spirit. Time spent here is time well-spent. Sleep comes after wonderfully fulfilling days on the water, on the land, or just reclining by the fire.
Inishturkbeg is one of the largest islands in Clew Bay, and the tallest. From anywhere, spectacular views unfold. To the west, only distant Clare Island and the earth's natural curvature interrupt the view to America. To the south, Ireland's most famous mountain, Croagh Patrick, stands hosting its annual pilgrimage. To the north, the sometimes eerie but always bewitching Nephin Beg range rolls out of sight. To the east, the mainland beckons, with the spire of Newport Church peeping and the lights of Westport winking.
The name means "Small Island of the Wild Boar".

Accommodation:
In all, Inishturkbeg has 17 guest bedrooms, spread across 4 houses, and can accommodate 1-40 people:
The Island House complex (about 12,000 sq ft) comprises 9 bedrooms, looking to the Wild West with external terraces of nearly 10,000 sq ft. It is a comfortable, beautifully furnished modern home with fabulous views, a cinema, heated pool (14 m x 6 m), gym, with living spaces that can accommodate big groups of people. Nearby is an associated Arts & Crafts building with a discreet space for beauty treatments or massages.
Located on the Elegant East shore by the Nursery Fields, the Pavilion is about 1,600 sq ft with terraces of about 1,600 sq ft, including a fabulous hot tub, external showers to use after watersports, and beautiful views of the marina, passage to the mainland, and sunrises. It is one of two Swedish-design buildings on the island which won the Red Dot design award in 2005. Luxuriously open-spaced, the Pavilion has 3 bedrooms, a very big living area, and an inside-outside fireplace.
Reek Cottage (2 bedrooms) on the south shore is intimate to the sea and enjoys all the day’s sun. It offers breathtaking views of Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain, known locally as ‘the Reek’. It has about 750 sq ft of luxurious living space including a brilliant suspended fireplace, and again extensive terraces (about 750 sq ft), from where games of tennis can be watched or moments spent in quiet contemplation of the wonderful scenery.
Yard Cottage (about 600 sq ft) is a discreet 2 bedroom cottage home, located ‘downtown’ at the heart of the island, where the polytunnel, orchard, boathouse, stables, old pier and old ruins are located.
An additional bedroom is available above the Boathouse for staff.
Full facilities are in place, from brilliant cooking to comfortable beds, and satellite TV (if you want it) and state of the art sound systems, to wireless broadband internet access.
Dining:
At Inishturkbeg, we believe in real food. We enjoy the challenges of the sea, the liveliness of the wind and the honesty of the earth. Inishturkbeg is a fully working free-range farm, with chickens producing wonderful island eggs, rare Kerry Cattle, over 100 sheep and lots of our
own vegetables, herbs and fruit. We offer lamb and beef, along with vegetables from the land, and all sorts of bounty from the free-spirited waters of the Irish Atlantic: mussels, scallops, salmon, lobster, crab, prawns, oysters. All stays are fully catered, with communal group lunches and dinners provided. At the more independent breakfasts our guests can help themselves to whatever they might want from any of our well-stocked kitchens.
Activities:
From horse-riding (6 resident riding-horses) to sailing or archery, powerboating to animal husbandry, picking some apples or just reading by beautiful fireplaces … your mind and body are freed. Tennis, basketball, football, or outdoor yoga and meditation are more of the activities which can be pursued. There is also a range of golf courses nearby. Four main sailing boats and four kayaks are available on the island.
Inishturkbeg has many gentle walks, including one around the whole shore, and one which takes in the 'the Top', from where a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding islands unfolds. Water-skiing, wake-boarding, knee-boarding, riding around on inflatables or just having fun bouncing around on our huge water trampoline – all of these activities can be enjoyed in the beautiful, clear waters of Clew Bay. The bay teems with fish, from the abundant mackerel to eel, flounder, sea trout, and many more. Of course, it is also possible simply to go dolphin and seal watching. Whales occasionally pass through, and the immense sunfish which lies on its side at the surface can sometimes be seen. CataTurk does a fine job as an inshore angler vessel, whilst Ocean Potion is available for bare-boat charter with a skipper, should deep sea angling be the mission.
There are also many places of historic and archeological interest, from the megalithic remains on Slievemore in Achill to the remains of the 5,000 year old settlement at the Céide Fields in North Mayo. Enjoy the spectacular views when walking up Croagh Patrick in the footsteps of the pilgrims of St Patrick or in the wilderness of nearby Connemara.
Best Time to Travel:
June, July and August are the best months to visit. Ireland has a mild, temperate climate. Summer temperatures generally range from 60 to 70 ºF (15 to 20 ºC); spring and autumn are generally 50 ºF (10 ºC), and winter is between 40 and 46 ºF (5 to 8 ºC) – snow is rare, but showers can occur at any time of the year.
Getting There:
Inishturkbeg is just 20 minutes from Newport, 30 minutes from Westport and 50 minutes from Knock International Airport, which has flights from London Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and an increasing number of continental airports as well as direct flights from Boston and New York. If you prefer something a little more exclusive, it is possible to fly privately to Knock by jet or even directly to the island by helicopter. If not using a helicopter, you can make the journey by car (approx. 50 minutes) followed by a 10 minute boat ride, all of which can be arranged by the island team.
