Fisherman Island

Private retreat for family vacation

English fishermen originally discovered this area of Maine back in the 17th century. Fishing, ice cutting, shipbuilding, and lumber were the local industries in the 18th and 19th centuries. But by the 1800s visitors started coming to the area. Settled in the 1600s as a fishing outpost, Fisherman Island was abandoned in 1675 with the start of King Philip's War. In 1925, a Unitarian minister purchased the island and built a large stone retreat there called Greystones Hall. On Fisherman Island, a wealth of wild berries and roses attract an unusual variety of birds. Two smaller islands are home to many families of seals. Nearby is Boothbay, the largest boating harbour north of Boston. The region boasts a magnificent shoreline that extends over protected sand beaches, secluded coves, and rocky headlands, meeting the crashing surf.

Accommodation

Stay in the Gothic-style, natural stone home (5,000 sq.ft.) with seven stylish bedrooms, offering accommodation for a maximum of 14 guests. Most rooms have eastern and western exposures as well as inglenooks. One is a bunk room for children (5 beds). The Great Room has a cozy alcove, cushy seating and a fireplace. All windows offer spectacular views. The garden has been recently landscaped and the house was remodelled in 1994. Electricity and telephone available. The accomodation/bedrooms: Main house: 3 x king size; 2 x double; 1 x twin. The "bunkhouse": 5 twin beds.

Activities

Relax in the sauna or steam room; swim and sun in and around the heated salt-water pool or on one of the two private beaches; explore hidden coves and lagoons; take boat excursions, go fishing, do water sports, play billiards, darts and board games, go bird-watching or seal and whale- watching. The Boothbay region also offers sailing, fishing, golf and tennis, and there are hiking trails in the Camden Hills State Park. The town of Boothbay has many restaurants, crafts and antiques shops, and in late June, “Windjammer Days“ are celebrated. You can also take trips to the well-known Monhegan Island retreat. Transport and water sports are included. Actually, the island operates two Parker boats (28 and 21 feet). Fishing is excellent in the area. Those who like can use the sea kayak.

Dining

Dine by the fireplace in the Great Room or enjoy breakfast and lunch on the terrace overlooking the pool. The chef's bountiful meals offer the best vegetables and fresh Maine seafood.

Best time to travel

Summertime is probably the best time to take full advantage of Maine's “100 harbours,“ ports, beaches, and the mountains and forests inland. The visit in autumn, however, brings a sepia tone to the state's quaint villages.

Getting there

Fly to Boston or Portland, Maine. Transfer to Boothbay Harbour, where the Skipper will await you. Fisherman Island is only 15 minutes by boat. The island reserved 3 parking places on the mainland. You can leave your cars there.
