The influence of the Gulf Stream gives Tresco a mild, subtropical climate and the sobriquet the “Island of Flowers”. Cacti, date palms, tree ferns, aloes, camellias, lilies and other tropical plants line the many walking paths on the island. There are no cars, ensuring peace and relaxation, but bicycles are available for hire to explore the serenity of this unique island in Great Britain.
The delightful, colonial-style Island Hotel enjoys a spectacular low slung waterside location ringed by uninhabited islands and the dramatic Golden Ball reef.
Rates:
Double room in the island hotel from GBP 150 to 240 (incl. breakfast and dinner).
Cottages from GBP 800 to 2,200 per week.
Location
Tresco in the Isles of Scilly lies off the southwest coast of Cornwall.
Accommodation
Spacious hotel accommodation built directly on the beach with most rooms offering private balconies or secluded patios with breathtaking views over the water or the immaculate island gardens. There are also several holiday cottages available offering accommodation for 2 to 10 people. They are part of old Tresco – traditionally built years ago of granite and slate and brought comfortably up to date. Every one is different; some are in rural positions, others are on the beach. All have a well-maintained subtropical garden in which to relax.
Dining
There is a first-class restaurant in the hotel, as well as the Terrace Bar where white wicker furniture and potted palms create a cool colonial mood. Carefully prepared, imaginative cuisine makes an excellent showcase for locally caught fish, island vegetables and Tresco reared beef.
Activities & daytrips
Tennis court, croquet lawn, heated swimming pool, fishing trips, walking, cycling, reading and relaxing in the Quiet Room with its magnificent picture window perched above the sea. Experience an 'age of sail' on the hotel’s very own locally built 36 foot gaff-rigged cutter, the ‘Pettifox’.
Best time to travel
The weather is warmest in July and August, and the daylight hours are long. In the quieter winter months, you may get miserable weather, short days, and many tourist facilities will be shut. Visiting in June or September has several attractions: the weather can be good, it is less crowded and all the shops, etc., are open.
Getting there
Tresco can be reached from London by travelling to Penzance, Cornwall, by car or train. The transfer to the island takes 20 minutes by helicopter or 2 1/2 hours by boat.
