Nestled in 14.3 hectares of lush native bush on the crystal clear waters of Pelorus Sound, "Te Rawa" offers magnificent views, total relaxation and all the comforts of home – in a truly unique aquatic environment. The property is located on Wilson Bay, one of the many sheltered coves and bays of the Pelorus Sound, halfway between Havelock (at the head of the Sound) and the open sea of the Cook Strait. You travel by road to Havelock, a charming tourist village on State Highway 6 between Blenheim and Nelson, and then cruise on your chosen water transport to Wilson Bay and Te Rawa.
Te Rawa is accessible only by boat – there is no road; no traffic jams; no rush hour – so getting there really is half the fun! Start with an unforgettable cruise through the stunning Pelorus Sound by water taxi, chartered launch, the regular mail boat or your own boat. All depart from the marina in the port of Havelock. It takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes by water taxi and approximately 2 hours by mail boat. With a float plane from Picton it takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes, and from Wellington or Paraparaumu approximately 30 minutes.
Road access to Havelock from Nelson, Blenheim and Picton, all less than an hour’s drive away. Travel links to these towns on major bus routes include Air New Zealand, Sounds Air, and the Interislander ferry service.
There are secondary schools in Blenheim, Picton, Rai Valley, and Nelson. Primary schools are located in Havelock, and in Waitaria Bay which has a school bus pick up at Manaroa, only 10 to 15 minutes from Te Rawa by boat, and a further 10 minutes on the school bus.
Telephone, internet and cell phone coverage is available. The mail boat comes once a week. Electricity is produced by a generator; water is obtained from a well.
Te Rawa has a licensed café and a charmingly rustic bar and restaurant on the water’s edge, with indoor/outdoor seating, on/off license, and cob pizza oven in the dining area. It is also the only fueling station and grocery shop in the outer Pelorus Sound. The shop stocks basic groceries, fishing gear, and other holiday items, while the fueling station sells diesel, petrol, and oil for boating or holiday bach requirements. It is frequented by the many bach owners and vacationers in the area, guests from NZ as well as overseas.
Accommodation Te Rawa features a choice of accommodation. All six units are set among native bush and boast magnificent views over the sparkling blue waters of the bay. Chalets and cabins alike are fully self-contained and have their own bathroom/shower, gas stove and refrigerator.
The Kingfisher Suite is situated on the waterfront. It is a luxury unit featuring a king-size double bed in a separate bedroom and a convertible sofa-bed in the living room. Also included are full kitchen facilities.
The Tui and Bellbird Chalets are two newly built comfortable motel-style units, each accomodating four persons. Features include one double bedroom plus two single bunks in the living room, gas stove, full service with bedding and towels provided.
The Shag Shack, the Gannet Colony and the Old Kiwi Bach are three budget units with double bed and bunks in two rooms accomodating four, six, and eight people respectively.
Activities There is good fishing for blue cod, snapper, kahawai, terakihi and occasional kingfish close at hand, with groper just around the corner. Scallops, mussels, rock oysters and crayfish are also abundant. You can walk along the shoreline or through native bush forests into neighbouring bays or, by arrangement, over neighbouring farm hills for breathtaking views of the outer sounds.
The Sounds region is ideal for swimming, kayaking, water sports and boating. Abundant bird life and dolphins can be watched in large numbers, albeit the times of their appearances are not very reliable. Scenic cruises, mussel farm tours and sumptuous seafood dinners are also favorite pastimes.
This is a unique opportunity to own a historically renowned and established Marlborough Sounds waterfront business and property.
