Vladi Private Islands comments on the topic of
Skorpios Island owned by the Onassis family |
Is Skorpios Island, the Greek private island of Onassis for sale?
Vladi Private Islands, August 2009, Farhad Vladi
|
Private Islands always arouse much media interest, in particular when a well known individual or family owns one. A rumour stating that Athina Onassis-Miranda has decided to sell Skorpios Island has caused widespread speculation and an international media frenzy concerning this very subject. It all began about two weeks ago with an article written by two journalists for the British Daily Express. (To the article >>)
Subsequent press articles claimed that celebrities such as Madonna, Bill Gates and Roman Abramowitz were all interested in the acquisition of the island for GBP 100 million. (Read it here >>)

However just over a week after the Daily Express article and other articles making the same claim were published, Athina Onassis-Miranda issued a statement, in which she denies that she is putting the island up for sale. (Read more >>)

| Some years ago, Vladi Private Islands was given the honour and mandate to appraise Skorpios island for a very different reason. As an island appraiser, I spent three days on Skorpios, wandered around the island and also visited the chapel where her grandfather, Aristotle Onassis, and his family were put to rest. At that moment, I thought the last thing Athina would do would be to sell the property where her family members are buried. |
An island with such family history and status is irreplaceable, as it holds so many emotions and memories of years gone by. It is intangible. The rumour of a sale of the island, started by the British newspaper, is actually an insult to the family. And how did the price of GBP 100 million come about?
When I was on Skorpios Island, apparently Madonna was visiting the area and asked a person on the mainland about his opinion of the value of the island. He did a very quick but unprofessional calculation and stated that since property on the mainland would cost EUR X per sqm and since Skorpios has Y sqm, the price would be GBP X times Y = GBP 100 million. This figure was never officially quoted as being the value of the island and hence again, a wild rumour.
Another example of an island, on which the former owner was laid to rest is Laucalla Island in the Fiji Islands. Vladi Private Islands was mandated to sell the island and it is now owned by Dieter Mateschitz, the owner of the company Red Bull. Mr. Mateschitz has since turned the island into an exclusive luxury resort, one of the very best in the Pacific Ocean or even in the world. The former owner of the island, Malcolm Forbes, was cremated and his ashes were interred on the island. Standing in front of Forbes’ grave on the island, I discussed the topic of this resting place with the manager.
It was decided that the ashes of Malcolm Forbes were to be exhumed and reburied in a family grave in the United States. A journalist later asked the Forbes family whether it was not the wish of Malcolm Forbes to be buried on, what he considered to be the most beautiful spot on earth - Laucalla Island. According to the Washington Post, a family member answered: It was his wish to be buried on Laucalla and that is what we did.
