Enjoy the sunniest region of New Zealand in the fascinating Marlborough Sounds, not far from the capital city of Wellington. Pohuenui Island is approx. 2,166 hectares in size, making it one of the largest privately-owned islands in the South Pacific. Just imagine – a terrain about eleven times the size of the principality of Monaco, or as if a piece of the Alps has been set down in the Pacific - Pohuenui Island lives long in the memory of those who experience it. About 50 kilometres of coastline with several private sandy coves, all belonging to your holiday refuge. Discover Pohuenui with its 45-kilometre-long pathways, its meadows and hills. From elevations of up to 600 metres, savour fantastic panoramic views of the Marlborough Sounds and neighbouring islands. The combination of the wild green hillsides of Pohuenui Island, its variety of flora and fauna, and the sea laden with fish, dolphins, penguins and seals creates a haven for nature lovers of all ages. Experience New Zealand first-hand: situated on the island is a typical New Zealand farm operation with 3,500 sheep, a small ostrich farm, and a herd of elegant alpacas.

Accommodation
A traditional farmhouse nestles on the estate, in an idyllic setting in the middle of a botanical garden which includes a mountain and waterfall. From macadamia nuts to walnuts, lemon trees to grapefruit trees – everything is grown here. The farmhouse has four comfortable bedrooms, three bathrooms, a modern and fully-equipped kitchen, dining room and terrace with comfortable garden furniture. In addition, cable tv, fax machine, video recorder and DVD player are all available for your use. An exclusive and captivating guesthouse has been built in a pretty cove in Garden Bay. Three bedrooms with 2 bathrooms offer up to 6 people ample room.

The interior is open-plan with a gallery on the first floor. The large living space with open kitchen, comfy seating and spacious terrace is the perfect place for entertaining or relaxing.

Dining
Guests can choose between full board (the caretakers prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner) or self-catering. In the latter case, the caretakers will provide the requested supplies. The carefully prepared meals have been praised by former guests. You can expect only the finest dishes using the freshest of seafood, typical New Zealand-style dishes, fruit from the island's own orchard, and selected wines from the nearby vineyards in Blenheim.

Activities and Excursions
Boat tours, fishing trips, dolphin watching, hiking through the countless paths and trails of the island, surrounded by wonderful flora and fauna (no poisonous animals nor plants). We recommend our guests spend at least one week on Pohuenui Island and combine this stay with a one or two-week trip to New Zealand. If after 100% pure nature, you decide to take a trip to the other environmental extreme – the urban life of Auckland, Christchurch or Wellington – then such places have plenty to offer. Discover the diverse culture of the Maoris, visit a Marae (the meeting place of a Maori tribe). Do not be surprised if you are greeted in true Hongi style with the traditional Maori “nose kiss“, or experience a Hangi, where New Zealand specialties are cooked underground.

Best time to travel
Generally, the Marlborough Sound region is worth seeing all year round. Peak season for New Zealand is between November and March. Winter is between May and the end of September; during this time, rain and wind are to be reckoned with.

Getting there
Fly to Wellington. Travel by helicopter directly onto the island (approx. EUR 800 for 4 people per journey) or from Havelock with the island's boat (EUR 280 return).
