Nestling on the eastern side of one of the world's most celebrated rift valleys, and born of the cataclysmic upheavals of more than 600 million years ago, the formation of the island is largely of schist and slate with the lower ground to the west as a raised beach from the island. The partly submerged Crannog, or fortified dwelling, dating from the Bronze Age around 200 B.C and situated some 200 metres in the channel to the east of the bridge, marks the earliest recorded human history of the island.

The Hotel
The Big House was built in 1884. The main family to occupy Eriska were the Blairs and Clark Hutchisons who still play a leading role in national life. They also built the bridge at the turn of the century, access before that was only by ford at low tide. In essence, the Big House remains the same, with the old billiard room and courtyard area converted to provide two bedrooms on the ground floor for those who find climbing stairs a disadvatage. The dining room has been enhanced by the addition of air-conditioning and a conservatory and all the surrounding buildings have now been converted to become part of the hotel resort complex.
The Rooms
As with any older house the bedrooms all vary in shapes and sizes but all have the same facilities and amenities one would expect from a world-class 5 star hotel.
In the main house there are two main categories of bedrooms, deluxe: slightly larger and tending towards the front of the house, and standard: a little smaller and located towards the east of the house.
Beyond the main house in the surrounding gardens lie the spa suites and two bedroom cottage suites. These offer more privacy and seclusion but not at the expense of service or style as they also offer 24-hour room service and all other facilities. The rooms outide the main house also have a greater degree of space set in private gardens with their own hot tubs.
The Lounge
The public rooms at Eriska all exude the comfort, warmth and hospitality one would expect from a house of this era. Open fireplaces dominate the ground floor, in the hall the fire burns constantly every day of the year. The main hall was wood paneled in 1913 with Burr Oak in an attempt to conceal the new wiring in the house. The Piano Room is the first room entered from the front door and is light and bright as is the drawing room which has soft bright furnishing and sofas and chairs which would tempt any visitor to simply relax and set their mind at ease.
