Amalfi Island, one of a cluster of islets facing Capri, has a history dating back to Tiberius and Roman times but more recently has attracted a different kind of owner. In the 1920s it was transformed by the famous architect Le Corbusier from a fortification to a private hideaway featuring a large terrace garden looking towards Capri and the dazzling Amalfi coast. The ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev later became its proprietor and most of his furnishings remain intact. Today it is owned by an Italian hotelier and can accommodate up to 12 paying guests.
