Location
Thanda Island is nestled within the Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve, a breath-taking marine protected area situated between Tanzanian mainland and Mafia Island. Tanzania’s vibrant capital city, Dar es Salaam, is just a 45-minute flight away from the island itself.

Accommodation
The private island is home to an elegant beach-house villa – a discreet and sumptuous residence befitting even the most discerning of guests. Comprising five exquisite bedroom suites and an expansive living area, the villa offers everything you could possibly want and more – from an extravagant beach house, an indoor aquarium, Steinway grand piano, wine collection, cigar humidor, glass rim-flow swimming pool and wrap-around dining area with its 180-degree view of the ocean.

Dining
Thanda Island’s cuisine is fresh, delicious and customised to your palate. Prior to their visit, guests will be personally contacted by the chef to find out their culinary preferences. From ocean-fresh fish and seafood, to vegetarian dishes or beef, game and poultry; from crisp seasonal vegetables to tropical fruits, and on to a choice of divine desserts – whatever you desire, Thanda’s talented cuisine team will deliver. An offering of delicious local dishes is also available if you would like to experience Tanzanian cuisine.

Activities
Situated within Tanzania’s sensational Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve, Thanda Island is just perfect for water sports. Indeed, the island offers some of the most spectacular snorkeling and diving off the East African Coast. Depending on the season, guests can watch turtles nesting or scan the surrounding seas in search of the gentle whale shark, dolphins and dugongs. Adrenaline junkies can try their hand at water-skiing, wakeboarding, tubing and stand-up paddling, whereas those who prefer to enjoy their private island vacation at a more relaxed pace can take to the water for a lazy cruise in a traditional Arabian fishing dhow or enjoy a spot of big game fishing aboard a 28-foot reef runner cat.

And for the ones who prefer to stay on land they can enjoy playing volleyball and tennis (the island has its own court), yoga, spa treatments, traditional Swahili-themed events, open-sky beach cinema and dog-care activities such as trainings, grooming, morning walks on the beach, etc. Also available are daily excursions to neighbouring islands.

How to Get There
Guests typically fly directly to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dares Salaam. Upon landing, whether flying privately or commercially, the Thanda Island team will either meet the guests on the tarmac or at international arrivals and escort you to a luxury SUV that will transfer you to the helicopter for your 35-minute flight to the island. Alternatively, guests can fly from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island in a fixed-wing plane and then transfer to Thanda Island by boat (30 minutes) or by helicopter (10 minutes).

Best Time to Travel
Thanda Island Private Marine Reserve boasts beautiful, warm tropical weather all year round. The scorching sunshine is occasionally punctuated by short showers, bringing with them a wonderful freshness. For the best of the weather, the months of June to October offer hot and humid temperatures, plenty of sunshine and short showers.
