Stewart Island/Rakiura is located at the very southern end of New Zealand. The only settlement is located at Halfmoon Bay/Oban on the eastern side of the island.
The property consists of two houses set on about 8 hectares of mature forest at Mill Creek, approximately 1km north of Halfmoon Bay/Oban. One house is 12 years old, has 4 bedrooms or 3 and an office. It has a brand new conservatory and a two car garage. The other is 130 years old and was formerly used as a small backpacker’s hostel. It is very private with sea, estuary and bush views. There gardens are quite extensive. The forest on the property is protected by a QEII Covenant that prevents clearing, logging or other development.
The bird life is abundant and unique. Flightless kiwi can be seen in the bush in the daytime. White-tail deer are also quite common and provide recreational hunting. Bush walking, kayaking and diving opportunities are excellent.
Stewart Island has a population of 380 permanent residents, increasing to about 1000 in the summer with vacationers and visitors. Approximately 40,000 people visit each year. Its main industries are tourism, fishing, and marine farming.
