Location
Tresco in the Isles of Scilly lies off the southwest coast of Cornwall.
Accommodation
Spacious hotel accommodation built directly on the beach with most rooms offering private balconies or secluded patios with breathtaking views over the water or the immaculate island gardens. There are also several holiday cottages available offering accommodation for 2 to 10 people. They are part of old Tresco : traditionally built years ago of granite and slate and brought comfortably up to date. Every one is different; some are in rural positions, others are on the beach. All have a well-maintained subtropical garden in which to relax.
Dining
Tresco has three restaurants:
The Ruin – a brand new beachfront restaurant at the Sea Garden Cottages, with its own wood-burning oven..
The Flying Boat Club – wonderful sea views paired with delicious cuisine.
The New Inn – warm and welcoming local pub.
For self-catering, there is the Tresco Stores and Deli – sometimes referred to as Fortnum’s on Sea – where you can find vintage wines and fine cheeses, as well as all the usual groceries and necessities.
Activities & daytrips
Tresco has a luxury Spa, three tennis courts, bicycles for hire, two indoor swimming pools, saunas, gyms and a seasonal Sailing School. There are numerable opportunities for trips to visit other islands using the local boating services, scheduled or private hire, as well as boat hire and fishing trips.
On nearby St Mary’s there is a golf course and facilities for horse-riding.
Best time to travel
The weather is warmest in July and August, and the daylight hours are long. In the quieter winter months, you may get miserable weather, short days, and many tourist facilities will be shut. Visiting in June or September has several attractions: the weather can be good, it is less crowded and all the shops, etc., are open.
Getting there
Tresco can be reached from London by travelling to Penzance, Cornwall, by car or train. The transfer to the island takes 20 minutes by helicopter or 2 1/2 hours by boat.
